The Health Ethics Trust®, a division of the Council of Ethical Organizations, conducts a a series of surveys on current compliance practices in healthcare. This research has two related purposes.

First, the Trust undertakes a series of "snapshots" pertaining to current industry practice. There are many views and theories (often at odds with one another) of what a compliance program should be doing. But there is comparatively little hard data on what is actually being done and practiced in the industry. We are collecting this data on a regular basis and will disseminate it on a monthly basis through The Pastin Report on Health Care Compliance.

The second purpose of this research is to establish a baseline against which best compliance practices can be measured and developed. Any quality assurance or performance improvement model worth its salt starts with a clear-eyed view of things "as they are." No theorizing or speculating here. As Joe Friday would say, "Just the facts, m'am (or sir!)."

For example, if a manufacturing company wants to improve its rate of widget production by 25%, it needs to know the current production rate. Likewise, if a healthcare organization wants to develop an exceptional compliance or corporate integrity program - one which will be an industry model - it needs first to know how current practices measure up.

Each month questions are asked of a random sample of healthcare compliance (integrity, ethics) officers regarding the actual compliance practices and related programmatic activities within their organizations. One method of gathering this data is through the Council's email listserve, "Talk About Compliance." (For a free subscription to Talk About Compliance, send a "subscribe" email to talk-about-compliance@xc.org or follow the instructions on the Talk About Compliance web page.)
